During the last fifty years, effective mechanisms for the protection of human rights, which preclude States from disregarding human rights in their territories, have been established and strengthened in the international society. Since the renewal of independence, Latvia has joined a number of international human rights organizations, as well as entered into various international engagements in the sphere of human rights' protection.
